Technology in the Margins

FutureINDesign (FIND) is a 501(c)3 STEAM career development program for marginalized young adults. Our mission is to narrow the digital literacy gap in Utah through immersive training in key technology and life skills, thereby reducing constrains of intergenerational poverty, and creating a pipeline of talent for Utah's growing tech workforce.

    WHY UTAH's Youth NEED FIND

    break the cycle of poverty

You've probably heard the phrase at-risk youth, but you might have wondered what exactly are these youth at risk for? The short answer is that they're at risk for getting trapped in a cycle of inter-generational poverty. Several factors influence this risk including adverse childhood experiences (ACE), low-income status, new-American status, minority status and limited access to resources just to name a few.

In order to secure their futures and pull them out of poverty, they need to be able to compete in the growing economic segments of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). Unfortunately, these at-risk youth have a difficult path ahead of them as they also face socioeconomic hurdles that marginalize them including race, gender, income levels, education standards, social influences and access to technology.

90% OF low income FAMILIES Only HAVE ACCESS TO information and TECHNOLOGY VIA MOBILE DEVICE

Only 3% of Minorities make up the Design and tech workforce

Less than 30% of Women MAKE UP THE TECHNOLOGY AND ART (STEAM) EMPLOYMENT POOL

    Technology In The Margins

    how find works

FIND connects young adults with educators and employers specializing in technology and design. This networking and education program gives the youth a foundation that they can build from while gaining valuable real world experience. We call this Technology in the Margins; building on the strengths and creativity of at-risk youth, creating a community of support while increasing the opportunity for jobs, continued education, certification and entrepreneurship.

Each young adult will leave the program with knowledge in graphic design and coding that will help them develop a portfolio of work which they can use to further their career/education. In addition, they will receive school credit and a stipend for their work.

    Program timeline

    ON-BOARDING PHASE

Each semester we recruit 15 young adults to participate in the FIND program. We’ll assess their literacy, basic education, interpersonal skills, criminal background and we’ll work out court compliance and work-release credit where applicable.

    PHASE 1

We begin the program with a focus on developing technical skills using Adobe Creative Cloud (CC), financial literacy, project literacy, public speaking, and team building. Students will complete a basic design module in Adobe CC as well as a 12-month success plan.

    Bonus: Field trips!

    PHASE 2

The second phase of the program focuses on career exploration, civic engagement, resume & portfolio building, presenting to clients and networking.

Students will end this phase of the program with a professional portfolio to demonstrate their proficiency in Adobe CC.

    PHASE 3

Once the students have a firm grasp of the tools, we turn our focus to setting goals, getting certified, working with startup incubators and gaining apprenticeships.

Students will complete and present a capstone project.

Bonus: Students host and present a TedX conference!

    PHASE 4

After completing the official FIND program, youth will receive guidance for scholarship application, career placement and startup incubation.

They’ll also be able to enroll in our secondary FIND courses to continue their growth. These include Coding, App Development, Web Design, Maker and Industrial Design.

    Together we build futures

    how you can help

90% of the jobs and careers emerging in our community require skills in technology, design, science, finance and communications. There are nearly 5,000 tech companies today in Utah with a projected growth of 100% by 2017. It's critical to educate the youth and provide the the tools and experience to meet the demand of new jobs being created. So, how can you help? There are two direct ways you can help; sponsoring a student or becoming a partner.

    SPONSORS

As a dedicated sponsor, your donations assist in paying for student tuition, working space, hardware and student stipends.

Your generous donation also allows us to maintain, sustain and expand our program to reach many more young adults, including those in rural areas who have limited access to modern technology.

    PartnerS

As a partner of FIND, you can offer your business and/or resources as a place that will help train these young students in real world scenarios.

With a young workforce ready to assist on your projects, tax breaks and promotion through FIND as a supporter of the community, you will be a leader in shaping the future of Utah business.
